Jakarta (Rifyu.com) – Sitting on the floor is said to be beneficial, one of which is to improve posture as long as you pay attention to your position, because sitting in an incorrect position can cause back and neck pain, as well as tightness in the shoulders and hips.

Chiropractor in Louisiana, United States, Matthew Cavanaugh, DC, as broadcast by Health some time ago, gave an example of sitting with one leg tucked under the other as an inappropriate position. According to him, this position can make the lower back tense.

Another mistake is sitting with a bent spine which can eventually lead to neck and shoulder strain and lower back pain.

In fact, a cross-legged sitting position may not be helpful for certain people, according to physical therapy doctor and CEO of JAG-ONE Physical Therapy John Gallucci, Jr, MS, ATC, PT, DPT,

“For many people, this (position) can reduce blood flow and put additional strain on the body and joints. Plus, the pressure of all your weight on your legs can also cause spider veins (a condition in which the blood vessels burst, which looks like a cobweb),” he says.

To avoid this added pressure, Gallucci recommends sitting in a cross-legged position with your back against a wall.

Director of The Joint Corp Kevin Lees, DC added, another common mistake when someone sits on the floor is to make the palms of the hands as a support. This position can cause pain or pressure in the wrists and loss of muscle activity in the lower back.

Meanwhile, propping yourself up on your elbows can cause shoulder pressure and pain, and can exacerbate back problems after a while.

“Stay close to something sturdy that can help you if you lose your balance or strength sitting up or getting up,” advises Lees.

The type of surface a person sits on can also make a difference when sitting on the floor. Hardwood surfaces provide less cushioning than carpet so it’s important to use a yoga mat or pad for added comfort.

According to Gallucci, overall, if one has to work seated, sitting on the floor can be a great alternative.

“You can also sit on the floor playing with your pet, reading a book or scrolling through your phone,” he said.
