President Jokowi will chair seven of the eight ASEAN Summit meetings – Rifyu.com

Jakarta (Rifyu.com) – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will lead seven out of eight meetings during the 42nd Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) which will be held on 9-11 May 2023 in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara.

Referring to the written statement from the Communication and Media Team at the 2023 ASEAN Summit, Saturday, the meeting that will be chaired by President Jokowi will be a Plenary Session, a meeting with representatives from ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), ASEAN Youth, ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ABAC), High-Level Task Force on ASEAN Community Post-2025 Vision (HLTF-ACV), session retreat Summit, as well as the 15th Summit Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT).

Meanwhile, one other meeting was the 15th Summit Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), on a rotating basis will be chaired by the Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Teuku Faizasyah conveyed that several issues that would be discussed at the upcoming summit were strengthening ASEAN institutions, drafting the ASEAN Post-2025 Vision, and developments in Myanmar.

“Then it also discussed post-pandemic economic recovery, strengthening the health architecture in the region, as well as other important issues in the region and outside the region,” he said.

The 42nd ASEAN Summit is expected to produce a number of documents including ASEAN Leaders’ Statements on strengthening ASEAN institutions, the ASEAN Vision after 2025, handling trafficking in persons (TPPO), protection of migrant workers and their families in times of crisis, health, electric vehicle ecosystems, and network development ASEAN village.

The summit will be attended by the heads of state/head of government of ASEAN countries, including Timor Leste as the 11th member country with status observers, according to the results of the 40th and 41st summits in Cambodia.

During the holding of the Summit, ASEAN member leaders will also fulfill the President’s invitation to the event sunset viewing And welcoming dinner on May 10, 2023.

Temporary spouse programme has been prepared for the companions of the ASEAN leaders.

Besides that, side events in the form of a People’s Festival by the Ministry of BUMN and the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy will take place on 9-13 May 2023 which includes various showcases local MSME products, beach clean-up, and cultural performances.

The 42nd ASEAN Summit is the first of two summits under Indonesia’s chair in ASEAN during 2023.

At the first summit in May, ASEAN leaders will discuss internal issues of the association as well as other important issues both in the region and outside the region.

Meanwhile, the 43rd Summit planned for Jakarta in September 2023 will not only be attended by ASEAN leaders but also leaders of ASEAN partner countries.

The discussion at the Summit will focus on developing and strengthening ASEAN cooperation with external partners.
